You come in contact with your toothpaste at least twice in a day. That is if you have the habit of brushing your teeth before going to bed. While most toothpastes use strong chemicals to help clean your teeth, some toothpastes claim to use natural ingredients.
But, if you read the ingredients carefully, you’ll see that even these “natural” toothpastes use some chemicals that are harmful to oral health. One of the most important reasons to make your own toothpaste at home is probably to avoid the harmful ingredients that are found in commercial toothpaste.
Before we get to the DIY recipes, here are the ingredients that are used for various purposes.
Ingredients For Whitening And Remineralizing Teeth
Since commercially popular toothpastes contain many potentially harmful ingredients, using natural alternatives that serve the same purpose without causing the toxicity and side-effects are the best method.
Whitening
- Dichotomous earth is essentially powdered fossils of ancient marine creatures. Though it is not very hard, the small, sharp particles make it an effective abrasive. As it contains trace minerals, it also helps the remineralization process.
- Turmeric has fantastic whitening properties and helps fight gingivitis. Despite being only mildly abrasive, turmeric whitens the teeth. It may also contribute to remineralization. But, when it comes to its taste, it may be quite hard to adjust to it.
- Activated charcoal has been in the news recently for its many uses, including teeth whitening. As it is highly abrasive, it may even inhibit remineralization.
Remineralizing
- Calcium and magnesium powder are especially effective in your toothpaste as these are the two primary nutrients that remineralization requires.
- Chocolate contains antibacterial agents that help fight plaque. It’s also used as an abrasive and can remineralize teeth better than fluoride. Select the unrefined beans (cacao nibs) for toothpaste.
- Liquid trace minerals are very easy to add to your toothpaste and help in remineralizing your teeth. Liquid trace minerals contain all remineralization essentials and they are easily absorbed by the body.
- Bentonite clay is a natural, gentle polish that is rich in minerals. It is also alkaline, which helps balance acidity. More importantly, it helps remove heavy metals and toxins from your mouth. White kaolin clay is considered to be even better. Avoid healing clays in toothpaste if you have metal fillings as it can lead to mercury leaching.
Base
- Water is essential to help mix ingredients and improve texture. Though most DIY toothpastes don’t mention it, it is always there as an option.
- Coconut oil fights the fungal infection candida in your mouth. It also helps reduce the cavity causing bacteria and boosts the microbiome in your gut. It is the most popular base and must be kept at 76° to stay in a liquid state.
- Sea salt is rarely used in commercial toothpaste. Its alkaline properties make it an ideal ingredient to add. High mineral salts like Himalayan pink salt may also help remineralize teeth.
- Baking soda is another common ingredient found in DIY toothpastes and is also a mild abrasive. Its alkalinity helps balance pH level in the mouth. Some people brush with just baking soda and water.
- Guar gum is a powder that helps to thicken toothpaste. It also helps the ingredients to blend together and keeps them stabilized. It can be used as a texture enhancer and must not be swallowed as it’s not digested well.
Flavor
- Spices such as cinnamon, mint, and cloves have a distinct flavor. Consider using dried and powdered versions. But, too much of these spices may harm the beneficial oral bacteria. They also serve as abrasives or even remineralizing agents.
- Xylitol, a sugar alcohol, attracts oral bacteria. But, the bacteria cannot metabolize sugar alcohols and they perish after consumption. Xylitol and other sugar alcohols also support mineralization.
- Stevia only functions as a sweetener and you should be careful as some can have added glycerin. Read the ingredients if you plan to use it. Plain as well as flavored versions are available.
- Essential oils perform several different roles in homemade toothpaste, depending on the one you use. But, excess quantities can harm the mouth’s microbiome.

Ingredients To Avoid In Homemade Toothpastes
Many popular toothpaste companies use harmful chemicals and other additives in their toothpaste recipes. These chemicals may damage the enamel and cause other oral problems. Some of these ingredients include,
- Propylene Glycol – It may cause skin, eye, and lung irritation and may lead to toxicity issues in organs.
- Glycerin – A non-toxic soap that can negatively impact the microbiome in your mouth and impede the natural remineralization process.
- Saccharin – This artificial sweetener is linked to many health issues like obesity, cancer, diabetes, and even brain cell death.
- Triclosan – This is a known pesticide and hormone disrupter that may cause antibiotic resistance and endocrine disruption. It may lead to health problems like breast, ovarian, prostate, and testicular cancer.
- Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) – An additive that can lead to canker sores, SLS can interfere with your taste buds by breaking up the phospholipids on your tongue.
- Hydrogen Peroxide – This popular ingredient is used in teeth whitening products including toothpaste. It may negatively impact the gums and other oral tissue.
- Fluoride – Though it can help remineralize teeth, it has been linked to several health risks. Other safer ingredients are equally effective making it unnecessary.
