One of the changes that happen in the body after the onset of puberty is the appearance of cellulite. Usually spotted on the thighs, buttocks, and the tummy, cellulite formation increases with age. While it’s perfectly normal to have some amount of cellulite on your body, too much can leave the skin looking wrinkled and dimpled. Although it’s difficult to remove it completely, there are ways to reduce the visibility and future appearance of cellulite.
What Causes Cellulite?
To cure cellulite, it’s important to understand what it is and what causes it. When the fat cells present below our skin protrudes into the epidermal layer, it forms cellulite. The tissues of the outer skin layer are formed differently in men, thus preventing cellulite formation. This explains why cellulite is more common in women than men.
Although it’s not exactly known why the cells protrude into the skin, studies state that it has something to do with poor lymph flow and low blood circulation.1 Here are some of the habits that can increase the formation of cellulite.2
- Drinking too much coffee
- Unhealthy weight loss
- Dehydration
- Long hours of inactivity
- Hormonal imbalance
Topical Applications To Reduce Cellulite
1. Dry Brushing
This age-old remedy for cellulite is known to significantly reduce the visibility of cellulite. Simply brush your skin with a soft-bristled brush. This improves blood circulation and gets the lymph flowing again. It is also believed that dry brushing helps remove dead skin cells and aids in the formation of new ones.3
Method
- Thoroughly wash your skin and dry it before you begin the process.
- Brush your skin upward in soft, quick movements. Avoid long strokes.
- Spend about 5–10 minutes brushing the cellulite-affected parts of your body.
- After dry brushing, take a warm shower to wash off the dead skin cells.
2. Coffee Grounds
While drinking coffee can promote the formation of cellulite, coffee grounds, funnily enough, have the opposite effect. They have exfoliating properties that tighten the skin and increase blood flow.4
Method
- Mix 4 tbsp of warm coconut oil (or virgin olive oil) and sugar.
- Add half a cup of coffee grounds to the mixture.
- Gently massage the paste onto the skin in a clockwise motion
- After 3–4 minutes, wash it off.
- Repeat the procedure thrice a week for quick results.
3. Apple Cider Vinegar
Here’s another addition to the benefits of apple cider vinegar! Along with cleansing your skin and treating acne, it also removes cellulite! Apple cider vinegar removes dead skin cells and enhances blood flow.5
Method
- Mix 4 tbsp of apple cider vinegar with 1 tbsp of honey
- Gently apply the paste on the cellulite
- Repeat twice a week.
Lifestyle Changes To Reduce Cellulite
1. Avoid fad diets
Every week, we hear about new diets that claim to magically reduce your weight. However, most of these fad diets don’t work! Even if they help you reduce weight in the span of a few weeks, they don’t work on a long-term basis. Once you stop the diet, you immediately put on weight.
Moreover, fad diets deprive you of the nutrition that your body requires. They make you lose weight in an unhealthy manner, encouraging cellulite formation. If you want to lose weight, do it by exercising regularly and eating healthily, instead of opting for these “miracle diets.”
2. Stay Hydrated
Dehydration is a major cause of cellulite. To stay hydrated, drink 2–2.5 liters of water (including juices and other healthy beverages) every day. But, avoid alcohol and aerated drinks as they lead to dehydration, causing fluid retention in the body.6
3. Exercise Regularly
Long periods of inactivity can reduce blood circulation and cause cellulite. To improve blood flow, workout for at least 30 minutes daily. Make sure to perform exercises that increase cardiovascular activity, such as running, aerobics, and even swimming!7
Follow these tips to reduce cellulite in a healthy manner. However, remember that cellulite is normal – over 90% of women have it! Don’t brood over it too much, as it does not define you in any way or make you any less beautiful!
