3 Thyroid-Supporting Smoothie Recipes

Adding a daily smoothie to your diet can do wonders for your thyroid and overall health. Starting your day with a smoothie is a great way to set the tone for a healthy day, or you can even swap out an unhealthy snack option with something packed with nutrition such as a thyroid-supporting superfood smoothie.

I love incorporating smoothies into my patient’s diets because it’s an excellent way to pack in a high dose of nutrient-dense superfood in one sitting. Plus, it’s way easier on the digestive system and ensures your body is getting exactly what it needs every single day.

I have developed three delicious thyroid-supporting smoothies that target digestive heath as well. A huge part of healing from Hashimoto’s or any autoimmune condition is working to strengthen the digestive system as 80% of our immune system resides in the gut! Restoring gut health is the very first step in healing from a thyroid condition.

These recipes were also designed as quick and simple breakfast or snack options that you can quickly blend up without the fuss and go about your day. I encourage you to try each one of these and see which one you like the best. Having one of these smoothies every day is a great step in the direction of balancing health!

Benefits Of Thyroid Superfoods Used In Smoothies

  • Green Plantains: These plantains are packed-full of resistant starch to feed the healthy bacteria in the gut. Just be sure to consume them when they are green and not yellow.
  • Coconut Milk: It is an excellent hypoallergenic non-dairy milk option – that is full of healthy fat – to help keep blood sugar levels stable and help to reduce inflammation.
  • Sea Salt: Adding a pinch of sea salt to your smoothies is a great way to give your adrenals a boost as adrenal issues are commonly associated with Hashimoto’s.
  • Probiotic Powder: This goes without saying. Probiotics are great for gut health and a healthy gut leads to a healthy body.
  • Coconut Oil: This oil is full of antibacterial and antiviral properties, helping to give your immune system a boost. It’s perfect for supporting energy levels. Anyone with Hashimoto’s or any other thyroid condition knows what it’s like to be fatigued all day long. Instead of gulping down caffeine all day, try a smoothie with coconut oil for an energy boost.
  • Cod Liver Oil: A vitamin D deficiency can significantly disrupt thyroid function and trigger an autoimmune attack; which is why it’s so important to determine if a vitamin deficiency may be something triggering your thyroid condition. This is why I have added cod liver oil to one of the smoothie recipes. Not only is this oil full of anti-inflammatory omega-3 fatty acids, but it’s also an excellent source of vitamin D which can help regulate thyroid health.
  • Collagen Hydrolysate: This type of collagen can help support amino acids and can help improve digestion, which is one of the primary reasons you will find this in one of the smoothie recipes. It also contains a decent amount of protein which is important in supporting the body’s natural healing process.
  • Greens: Fresh spinach and other dark leafy greens are excellent additions to your smoothie as they are full of powerful vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to support overall health. Some may worry about the goitrogenic properties of some of these veggies (broccoli, kale, collard greens) but here’s some reassuring news. Occasionally eating small amounts of goitrogenic vegetables should not cause an issue for those with Hashimoto’s and most people with Hashimoto’s will be able to consume a small about of goitrogens (this does not include soy and canola, which should be kept out of the diet). Keep in mind that everyone will be unique in how they react to foods – not just goitrogens – so be sure to listen to your body.
