How To Reduce A Fever Fast And Safely

Technically, a fever is not an ailment but a defense mechanism. It is your body’s natural response to fight off viruses and bacteria by weakening the germs and limiting their ability to reproduce. However, sometimes it may rise too high, in which case, the fever can be serious and lead to complications. If the temperature is rising too high, there are several home remedies you can use to bring it down. Here are 6 treatment options to control high temperature.

1. Use A Cold Compress

This is one of the most common ways to bring down a soaring fever. A cold water compress, when placed on hot skin burning with fever, can help cool down the skin and regulate the body temperature.

Pour cold water into a bowl.
Simply soak a clean cloth in the cold water for 1 to 2 minutes and wring out the excess water.
Place the cold compress on your forehead.
When the compress warms up, soak the cloth in cold water again.
Repeat the process for about 15 minutes to bring the fever down a couple notches.

2. Use Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV)

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) is a popular Austrian home remedy for a fever. This remedy may take up to 1 hour to work, which is just as well because body should not be subjected to sudden changes. Apple cider vinegar lowers the body temperature by increasing blood flow and boosting the immune system.

1/2 cup Apple cider vinegar (ACV)
A pair of long, wool socks

Pour 1 cup of water into a bowl.
Pour in ½ cup of apple cider vinegar.
Mix the liquids thoroughly.
Dunk the socks into the apple cider vinegar solution.
Take them out and squeeze them to remove dripping moisture.
Put on the apple cider vinegar-soaked socks, covering your feet up to the calves to lower a high body temperature.
Repeat as often as required until the fever has reduced.

3. Use White Vinegar

That bottle of white vinegar in your kitchen can come to your rescue if you’re dealing with a high fever late at night. This is another home remedy that has proven effective to reduce a high fever to a comfortable level.

1 to 2 tbsp White vinegar
A pair of long, wool socks

Pour 1 cup of water into a bowl.
Add 1 to 2 tablespoons of white vinegar to it and mix thoroughly.
Immerse the socks in the vinegar solution, soaking them completely.
Wring out the excess dripping liquid.
Pull the vinegar-soaked socks onto your feet and up to your calves to draw out a high fever.
Replace the socks after 45 minutes if the fever doesn’t come down.
Repeat the treatment as needed until you bring down your fever.

4. Use An Onion

When fresh-cut pieces of an onion are secured to the bottom of the feet with a sock, it may help reduce the effects of a viral fever. Ayurvedic medicine uses onion poultices on the chest to cure fevers and flu. This remedy can be considered a modern take on the traditional onion remedy.

Cut an onion in half and place one half on the soles of each of your feet. The cut side of the onion should be touching the skin.
Wear socks to hold the onion in place.
Keep the onion in place for 2 to 3 hours or overnight.
Repeat the remedy until you bring down your fever to a safe level.

5. Use Egg Whites

Egg whites have been successfully used to reduce a fever for a long time. While there is no scientific proof, overwhelming anecdotal evidence supports the credibility of this remedy. One working explanation is that egg whites absorb the body heat through the sweat glands present on the soles of the feet.

2 Eggs

Crack 2 eggs and drain their whites into a bowl.
Whisk the whites.
Apply the whisked egg whites to the soles of your feet with a brush. You could then wear socks to cover your feet.
When the whites become dry or warm, reapply the egg white coating on the soles.
Continue this until the fever comes down to a more comfortable level.

6. Use Potatoes

Similar to some of the other remedies above, raw potato slices can be applied to the bottom of the feet to reduce a fever. If you don’t have vinegar or onions at hand or if you simply don’t wish to put on wet socks, you can fall back on this remedy.

Raw potato slices
White vinegar

Pour white vinegar into a bowl. The vinegar should be enough to soak potato slices.
Put a couple of raw potato slices into the vinegar and let them soak for 2 to 3 minutes.
Place the vinegary potato slices on your forehead for about 15 minutes to bring down a high fever.
You can cover the potato slices on your forehead with a clean cloth for better results.
Repeat as needed until you recover completely.
