It always feels good to wake up refreshed and energetic, but if you have to drag yourself out of bed because of a pounding headache, then you feel it’s all downhill from there. Morning headaches are not only painful but annoying and confusing as well. You definitely did not go to bed the other night with the intention of waking up with a pounding headache. If all you did was sleep, then what could possibly trigger such headaches? As it turns out, there are many possible triggers of awful morning headaches. Although many of them may not be under your control, some of them are. Here are some of the causes of morning headaches and what you can do to prevent them.
1. You Did Not Get Enough Sleep
Not getting enough sleep is one of the most common causes of early morning headaches. Your body needs about 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night in order to function efficiently. So when you do not sleep enough, it assumes that something is not right and goes into panic mode. And as a result, adrenaline gets produced resulting in increased heart rate, high blood pressure, and stress, which all contribute to headaches. Make sure to sleep on time so that you get a good night’s rest.
2. You Overslept
You know that not getting enough sleep is bad for you, but did you know that sleeping too much is just as bad? Snoozing for more than 9 hours at a stretch decreases the level of the hormone serotonin in your brain. This reduces the blood flow to the brain and triggers a headache. This type of a headache is quite common during the weekends when you sleep in a little later than usual.
3. You Have A Hangover
Most of the time, you may over-indulge in alcohol and dance the night away. You may not get a headache that night, but it is going to get to you in the morning. Alcohol is a diuretic, which causes your body to expel water. This causes a reduction in the volume of blood flow to the brain, leaving you with a splitting headache in the morning. The best way to stop the headache is to rehydrate by drinking water or electrolyte drinks.
4. You Did Not Drink Your Morning Coffee
Caffeine is a nervous system stimulant. If you drink coffee regularly, then not getting your daily dose of caffeine at the right time can cause headaches. So if you decide to sleep in, then you may wake up with a nasty headache. The effects are worse if you are a heavy coffee drinker. Downing a cup of coffee can make you feel better instantly. And if you are looking for a long-term solution, you should try and cut back on coffee slowly over a course of a week or two.
5. You Snore While Sleeping
Snoring continuously at night can be a sign of sleep apnea, which is a condition that can cause you to choke or gasp for air. In severe cases, you may even stop breathing temporarily when you are asleep. Though the choking episodes may only last for a few seconds, it can disrupt the flow of oxygen to your brain. Less oxygen causes the blood vessels in your brain to expand, increasing the flow of blood and blood pressure in your head, which can result in a headache. You should visit your doctor if you wake up with a headache quite often as you may not even know you have sleep apnea. If you are diagnosed with the condition, you may have to wear a breathing machine while sleeping.
