Depression is a serious mental health issue that affects a person’s quality of life. “Depression affects an estimated one in 15 adults (6.7%) in any given year. And one in six people (16.6%) will experience depression at some time in their life,” according to the American Psychiatric Association. It is essential that people going through this difficult time get the help that they need. Most of the time depression is identified by its characteristic symptoms which include having a low or depressive mood, a loss of interest in performing activities, feeling of emptiness, hopelessness, worthlessness, and having suicidal thoughts. Although these are the more popular symptoms of depression, there are some other lesser known signs to look out for.
1. Unexplained Physical Problems
One of the lesser known signs of depression is experiencing physical problems that don’t seem to have any identifiable cause. People with depression have been found to report body pain, neck pain, and lower back pain among several other conditions. Some studies have also indicated that depression may cause people to feel pain more severely than others with the same condition.
2. Anger And Irritation
People suffering from depression are likely to get angry and lose their cool over seemingly small situations. They may constantly express negative feelings or thoughts and are likely to experience irritated moods. People with depression have reported feeling hostile and argumentative in many circumstances.
3. Erratic Sleep Patterns
People with depression may experience a change in their sleep patterns. They may either suffer from insomnia which tends to make the depression worse or they may even sleep excessively while still feeling tired and exhausted the next day. Both lack of sleep and excessive sleeping could be indicators that an individual is suffering from depression.
Feeling exhaustion, tiredness, and fatigue right after waking up in the morning and throughout the day is another symptom of depression. This lack of energy causes the individual to stay at home and avoid any social situations.
Having depression doesn’t necessarily mean that the individual feels sad constantly. Not feeling anything at all could also be a sign of depression. People with depression have reported not feeling excited about the things that used to interest them before. An intense lack of motivation to perform any task and a feeling of nothingness are other symptoms to look out for.

Depression may lead people toward unhealthy and destructive habits and lifestyles like excessive drinking or substance abuse. People may also want to numb their pain by distracting themselves from reality by staying intoxicated or high.
7. Increase Or Decrease In Body Weight
Depression may take a hit on an individual’s eating habits as well. In some cases, people experience a complete loss of appetite and have difficulty eating ultimately leading to a decrease in their body weight. In other cases, individuals have intense food cravings that they’re unable to control and may binge eat causing a drastic increase in weight.
8. Inability To Focus
Individuals going through depression may have difficulty concentrating on a specific task. They may also begin to feel a sense of restlessness and agitation. People suffering from depression have reported forgetfulness and inability to see a task through to completion.
9. Difficulty Making Decisions
People suffering from depression tend to experience difficulty when it comes to making decisions. Individuals may even find seemingly small decisions like what to have for breakfast incredibly challenging. This may be due to the fact that depression affects their cognitive functioning.
10. Personal Hygiene Takes A Hit
Depression causes people to lose interest in performing tasks in general. This may take a hit on their sense of personal hygiene and grooming. They may not see the point in showering or cleaning up. This could end up affecting their physical health as well.
