A beautiful face marred by skin conditions like acne is every woman’s nightmare. Not just women, even men suffer from acne and today’s metrosexual men are more concerned about their flawless skin than ever before. Among all skin conditions, acne is the most common in the United States.1
Although acne generally occurs among teenagers, it may also affect people of all ages. Recent research shows that an increasing number of women aged between 30 and 50 also have acne problems. But, dermatologists are not sure of the exact reason behind this.
Acne occurs when the hair follicles get clogged with oil and dead skin cells, often causing whiteheads, blackheads or pimples. Acne generally appears on the cheeks, forehead, nose, chin, chest, upper back and shoulders. Though they can be clinically treated, simple remedies like drinking sufficient water to keep the skin well-hydrated and toxin-free can help reduce their severity or eliminate them altogether.2
While drinking plain water is great for skin health, infusing the water with fruits and herbs is even better as it improves the healing and protective powers of the fluid intake. Here are detox drink recipes that promote healthy skin and treats acne.
1. Rose, Strawberry, And Lemon Infused Water
Recharge your skin with this easy and delicious recipe. All you need is a handful of strawberries, rose petals and a sliced lemon, which together provide a rich dose of antioxidants. Ensure that the rose petals that you select are pesticide-free and thoroughly washed. Though strawberries with rosewater make an amazing combination, you can experiment with blueberries or raspberries or any other berry that you like.
- 1 cup of strawberries
- Petals from two roses
- 1 sliced lemon or the juice from half a lemon
- A jug of filtered water
- Add the strawberries, lemon, and rose petals into a jug of filtered water.
- Allow the ingredients to infuse in the refrigerator for a couple of hours, preferably overnight.
- Pour the infused water from the jug into a glass using a strainer and drink it.
2. Cucumber, Lemon, And Mint Water
Another tasty and effective detox drink is this combination of mint, lemon, and cucumber. This drink flushes out the toxins from your kidneys, reduces bloating, cleanses the skin and detoxifies your system. Citrus fruits like lemon contain antioxidant compounds called limonoids that activate detoxifying enzymes. Lemon juice is rich in vitamin C, which boosts your immune system, rejuvenates your skin and promotes wound healing.3
Peppermint works as a natural appetite suppressant and antimicrobial that destroys the germs present in food and makes you feel fuller. This recipe serves eight cups. So, drink this through the day at regular intervals. However, drink it within 24 hours of preparing it.
- ½ gallon purified water
- ½ lemon, sliced
- ½ lime, sliced
- ½ grapefruit, sliced
- 1 cup cucumber, sliced
- 1 teaspoon ginger, sliced
- A few peppermint leaves
- Fill a pitcher with purified water.
- Add all the ingredients to the pitcher and mix them.
- Allow the water to infuse in the refrigerator for at least two hours before drinking.
- Drink the water within 24 hours of preparing it.
3. Strawberry And Mango Water
A few glasses of this mango and strawberry detox water can enable you to meet your daily needs of folate and vitamins A and C. That’s because strawberries are loaded with antioxidants while its vitamin C content increases collagen production, which helps to improve skin’s elasticity and resilience and prevents wrinkles.
Mangoes have a positive effect on your skin whether you use them internally or externally. They unclog the skin pores and eliminate pimples making your skin clear and fresh. Remember to drink the water within 24 hours of preparing it.
- 1 cup mango cubed
- ½ cup strawberries quartered
- 2 quarts of filtered water
- Ice cubes (optional)
- Fill a pitcher with two quarts of filtered water.
- Add in the mango cubes and the strawberry quarters.
- Cover the pitcher and allow it to steep in the refrigerator for about four hours.
- Add ice cubes, if required, and drink it fresh.
4. Watermelon, Cucumber, And Mint-Infused Water
One method to reduce the occurrence or severity of acne, especially if you have acne-prone skin, is to keep your body hydrated and flush out the toxins. Watermelon and cucumber are both excellent at this and since both are made of almost 95 percent water, they also hydrate you effectively. Adding a dash of mint enhances its distinct flavors and its antimicrobial effects.
- One 16 oz. jar (2 servings)
- 45 small chunks of fresh watermelon
- ½ medium-size cucumber, cut into slices
- ¼ cup of fresh mint leaves
- Add the watermelon chunks and cucumber slices to the 16 oz. jar.
- Tear or chop the fresh mint leaves to increase its flavor and add it to the jar.
- Using a spoon, gently mash the fruit to release its juices.
- Fill the jar with filtered water and stir the mixture well.
- Cover with a lid, refrigerate overnight and drink it within 24 hours.
5. Chia With Fruit-Infused Water
Chia seeds are in great demand today among health enthusiasts as they are loaded with nutrients and antioxidants. Besides providing you with fiber, they also contain omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to reduce inflammation related to acne.4
Though most people use chia seeds for cooking or to add them to porridge or smoothies, they can also be mixed with many health drinks. Adding them to your detox water and flavoring it with fruits gives you a tasty homemade natural detox drink.
- A large bottle or jar
- 2 quarts cold water
- Fruits of your choice (lemon, strawberries, watermelon)
- 1 tablespoon chia seeds
- Add all the ingredients to the bottle or jar and stir well.
- Refrigerate for 30 minutes and stir again.
- Drink it within a couple of hours.
6. Blueberry And Orange Detox Water
Blueberries, like all other berries, are an excellent source of antioxidants, which are essential for healthy skin. So, people with acne-prone skin must habitually eat berries to prevent the problem from magnifying. Additionally, mandarin oranges contain high levels of vitamin C, which is another powerful antioxidant that is crucial for skin health.
- 6 cups filtered water
- 2 mandarin oranges, cut into wedges
- 1 cup blueberries
- Ice cubes (optional)
- Pour the water into a pitcher and add all the ingredients to it.
- Place the pitcher in the refrigerator for about six hours to allow the water to infuse.
- Alternatively, you may squeeze the mandarin orange and squash the blueberries to enhance its flavor.
- Drink it cold and finish it within 24 hours of preparing it.
7. Aloe Vera, Apple Cider, Lemon, Mint, And Honey
Aloe vera needs no introduction and its skin health benefits are well-known. Apple cider vinegar is rich in enzymes, and when combined with aloe vera, it can improve your complexion and gut health.
Vitamin C found in lemons is an effective antioxidant and is good for stimulating the liver and boosting the body’s detox powers. Honey can be used internally or externally for skin care and its antibacterial and anti-fungal properties help treat acne and scarring.
- 1-2 cups water
- 1 teaspoon aloe vera
- 1 teaspoon apple cider vinegar
- 1 lemon, juiced and sliced
- A few mint leaves
- 1 teaspoon honey (omit on sugar-free detox)
- Pour hot or room-temperature water, as per your preference, into a jar.
- Add all the ingredients into the jar and mix it well.
- Allow it to steep for 4-5 hours and drink it fresh.
