Do you often feel a tingling in your feet after sitting for long hours? Or do your hands and feet go cold and numb for no apparent reason? You might be having bad circulation, a condition where there isn’t enough blood supply to all the parts of your body. Here’s what causes it and what you need to do to cure it.
Causes Of Bad Circulation
The lack of blood supply to all the body parts is usually due to the accumulation of fatty deposits in the arteries. This accumulation can be the result of various factors, some of which are mentioned below.1
- High blood pressure
- High cholesterol
- Improper posture
- Heart disease
- Unhealthy diet
Improve Blood Circulation Through Food
There are certain foods (fried food, dairy, and seafood) that cause the blockage of the arteries, and it is best to eat these foods in moderation. However, there are a few ingredients that you can use in your diet to cure bad circulation.
1. Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar, when consumed in small quantities, is known to improve circulation. It contains enzymes that break down the fatty deposits clogged in the arteries. Here’s how you can use apple cider vinegar to get rid of poor circulation.2
- Mix 1 tbsp of apple cider vinegar to a glass of warm water
- Drink the mixture after every meal
However, don’t use apple cider vinegar if you are pregnant or lactating. It should also be avoided by those who suffer from an irritable bowel syndrome or acid reflux.
Studies show that garlic not only increases blood flow but also reduces the risk of cardiovascular disease.3 The benefits of garlic could be due to allicin, a compound that is known to be good for the heart.4
- Eat 2 cloves of garlic every morning on an empty stomach
- Chew it well to make sure that allicin is released.
- If you cannot handle the strong flavor of garlic, toss it in your salad.
3. Dark Chocolate
All you chocolate lovers out there, time to rejoice! Dark chocolate can actually be used in the treatment of poor circulation. It has flavonoids and procyanidin, which increase blood circulation.5
- Eat one block of dark chocolate every day
- Make sure you eat it in moderation, as excess consumption could actually be bad for your heart.
4. Green Tea
No list is complete without green tea! It removes the deposits that block blood flow and increases blood circulation. In a study, the participants showed a considerable increase in blood flow after they drank green tea.6
- Drink 2 to 3 cups of green tea every day.
- For added benefits, add a spoon of honey to the tea.
5. Coconut Oil
Coconut oil has properties that enhance circulation and return the sensation to numb parts of the body. It also contains medium-chain triglycerides, which are compounds that reduce the inflammation of the blocked arteries.7
- Consume 2 to 3 tbsp of coconut daily.
- You can add the oil onto your food, or drink it raw.
Improve Blood Circulation Through Lifestyle Changes
1. Avoid Smoking
To improve blood circulation, put away those cigarettes. Smoking regularly can increase the cholesterol level in the body and harden the arteries, thus decreasing blood flow.
2. Exercise Regularly
A sedentary lifestyle can lead to poor blood circulation. Every day, make sure to get at least 30 minutes of exercise to get your blood pumping. If you’re working long hours, take frequent breaks and perform simple stretches.
If you’re experiencing temporary numbness, apply coconut oil on the affected area to see quick results. Taking a warm water bath or soaking your feet in water will also help ease the numbness. If your feet go numb frequently, consider wearing warm thermal socks. Poor circulation isn’t very difficult to treat – a few dietary and lifestyle changes will go a long way in increasing your blood circulation.
