This year, Christmas came early for many parents at St. Luke Hospital in Kansas City, MO. Infants in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) also got a little surprise of their own. Here’s the story:
Having to spend the holidays in the hospital while your baby is in the NICU, fighting to get stronger and go home, is a difficult time for any family. The hospital staff, in collaboration with the dedicated group of volunteers from March of Dimes, decided to help parents celebrate their beautiful, tiny people. They were determined to make it a magical Christmas for these special families, and even went out of their way to make it a memorable one.
The staff dressed up 31 babies as precious Christmas gifts with handmade hats, and gave the parents a special card that honored their perfect, priceless little gifts.
Former NICU moms who are also photographers, accompanied Santa Claus and visited the little bundles to capture heart-melting moments for parents to cherish forever. Babies who live in the NICU are either born sick or prematurely, there’s nothing harder for a parent to watch and not have control of the situation. The overwhelming images may even make you tear up.
